Institutional Landscape
Every landscape responds to its surroundings. Some, however, must also respond to science.
When CHAAS was invited to design the landscape for the Bharat Biotech campus, we quickly realised this would be very different from a residential garden. Here, beauty alone was not enough. Every planting decision had to support the daily functioning of a biotechnology facility.
The objective was simple yet challenging—create a landscape that reduced dust, required minimal maintenance and avoided attracting insects, while still providing a pleasant and healthy environment for employees.
Instead of selecting plants based on appearance, we selected them based on performance. Conocarpus, Mahogany and other suitable species were chosen for their ability to withstand local conditions, intercept dust and minimise insect attraction. Alongside the planting strategy, CHAAS designed an efficient irrigation system to ensure long-term sustainability with minimum water wastage.
The completed landscape quietly performed its role every day. It created a greener campus, improved the surrounding environment and demonstrated that ecological design can support scientific institutions without compromising operational requirements.
This project reminded us that the best landscapes are often the ones people hardly notice—not because they lack beauty, but because they solve problems so quietly.
A successful landscape is not always the most colourful one. Sometimes it is simply the one that performs every single day.
